Inscription reads: In memory of Charles Canby of Kno-ttingley, who departed this life the 20th day of March 1838 aged 23 years
Tho' Boreas blast and Neptunes waves. Have toss'd us to and fro: In spite of both by Gods decree. Were harbour'd here below; Where we now safe at anchors rule, with some part of the fleet, Yet once again we must set sail, Our saviour Christ to meet.

   
 

Parish Register: The only entry in the register around that date is: The body of a sailor cast on the shore at Spurn Point 25th March 1838.
